Sunday data center tidbits.

First up is this article about the Internet’s dirty carbon secret, complaining that Internet services are hiding their carbon footprint information so people can’t make informed decisions. The reason the data center carbon reduction details are being discussed in industry forums is that they’d make the average non-technical person’s eyes glaze over. The suggestion of using providing PUE numbers as a universal comparison, despite the fact that PUE isn’t really measuring data center efficiency (I’ve written extensively on the problems with PUE in previous posts), is a clear sign of someone who doesn’t have a clue. I’m also really sure that people are going to choose what websites to visit or what social media network to use based on their carbon footprint, NOT.

Fie on the Green Grid for foisting PUE on us!
