First thing on today’s list is an article on data center power use increasing while industrial use is decreasing. This isn’t really a surprise, especially if you view the data center as actually an information factory. The data center is the new industrial revolution.
The folks in Finland are going to be using data center heat to warm houses. Another benefit to the underground data center is natural cooling from being below ground itself. It’s hard to find a much better or more consistent heat sink than the ground.
Data center bozo of the day: whoever thought it would be a great idea to make PCI-X risers for servers that turn universal slots (3.3V/5V) into 5V only. Sorting that one out wasn’t the most fun I’ve ever had on a Monday.
